Q: Where did the firm’s name originate?
A: Our firm’s name, Fourth Quadrant Asset Management, was derived from an essay written in 2008 by esteemed philosopher and trader Nassim Taleb who is probably better known for authoring such books as “The Black Swan”, “Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in the Markets and Life”, and “Dynamic Hedging: Managing Vanilla and Exotic Options”. In our opinion, the essay was written in order to convey the limits of statistics and their uses, including but not limited to the world of finance. In simplistic terms, the fourth quadrant was described by Mr. Taleb as an extremely vulnerable area that should be avoided, however bankers and other market participants regularly engage in, placing the entire system at risk. It was our goal to create a firm where we attempt to mitigate as much of that risk as possible by using long volatility strategies in order to minimize the impact from blow ups which decimated many in 2008 by such intrusions into the fourth quadrant.
